Punakha: Bhutan’s Ancient Capital and Fertile Valley of Rivers

Punakha is one of Bhutan’s most historically and culturally significant districts. Once the capital of Bhutan, this picturesque valley is located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male) and Mo Chhu (female) rivers. Getting to Punakha
Punakha is approximately a three-hour drive from Thimphu. The journey includes crossing the Dochula Pass, where travelers are greeted with breathtaking views of the Himalayas on clear days. The pass, adorned with 108 stupas, is a popular stop on the way to Punakha.

Weather
Punakha has a warmer climate compared to other parts of Bhutan, with mild winters and hot, humid summers. Winter temperatures range from 5°C to 15°C, while summer temperatures can reach up to 30°C. This warm climate supports Punakha’s lush agriculture and makes it a pleasant year-round destination.

Popular Attractions in Punakha
Punakha Dzong (Pungthang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang)
Built in 1637, Punakha Dzong is one of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks and served as the administrative center and fortress of Bhutan’s early kings. Nestled between the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers, the dzong’s stunning architecture, intricate woodwork, and historical significance make it a must-visit. Suspension Bridge Over Mo Chhu River

Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility)

Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten
A 30-minute drive and a short hike from Punakha, this exquisite chorten (stupa) is perched on a hill overlooking the valley. Built by the royal family to bring peace and prosperity to Bhutan, the chorten is an architectural masterpiece with detailed Buddhist art. Visitors can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the Punakha Valley from the top.

Punakha Tshechu Festival
Held annually at Punakha Dzong, this festival is one of Bhutan’s major cultural events.
