All travelers visiting Bhutan, except citizens of India, require a visa. Currently, visitors from Bangladesh and the Maldives have the option to obtain a visa upon arrival. Here’s what you need to know about applying for a Bhutan tourist visa.

Bhutan Visa Requirements

To apply for a Bhutan visa, you’ll need:

  • Digital copy of a valid passport
  • Recent digital passport photo
  • Arrival and departure dates
  • Travel insurance for the duration of your stay
  • Payment details for the visa processing and sustainable development fees

Note: Your visa application will be processed once these requirements are complete and you’ve paid the visa processing fee and Sustainable Development Fee (SDF).

Visa Processing Fee

  • Cost: USD $40 per person

Sustainable Development Fee (SDF)

The Sustainable Development Fee supports Bhutan’s national development goals, including healthcare, education, and environmental conservation. The SDF applies to all visitors as part of their visa application:

  • Adults: USD $200 per day
  • Children (6–12 years): 50% discount on the SDF
  • Children under 6: Exempt from SDF

Example: For two adults and a six-year-old child visiting Bhutan for four nights, the total SDF would be calculated as:(2 adults×200 USD×4)+(1 child×100 USD×4)=2000 USD(2 \text{ adults} \times 200 \, \text{USD} \times 4) + (1 \text{ child} \times 100 \, \text{USD} \times 4) = 2000 \, \text{USD}(2 adults×200USD×4)+(1 child×100USD×4)=2000USD

Note: The SDF does not cover expenses such as accommodation, meals, or transport.
