Tour Overview
Punakha Dzong safeguards Bhutan’s most sacred relic, the "Rangjung Kharsapani," a self-manifested image of the Bodhisattva of Compassion. In the 17th century, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel and the Bhutanese militia, known as “pazaps,” defended this relic from Tibetan forces. To honor this victory, Zhabdrung introduced the Punakha Drubchen festival. Each year, visitors from nearby Gasa and highlanders from Laya join Punakha locals to commemorate this event, highlighted by a re-enactment of the historic battle, paying tribute to Zhabdrung and the valor of Bhutan’s defenders.
